SITUATION  

Madara is a village in Bulgaria, province of Shumen, in the western foot ot the Madara`s plateau, 15km eastern from Shumen. It has 1705 inhabitants. Grain and industrial crops are grown. 1.5 km eastern from Madara is located the national historical and archaeological preserve “Madara”. Archaeological finds from the neolith and eneolith: thracian village, Roman country house, and a stronghold (2-5 century), ancient Bulgarian palace compound, sanctuaries (shrines), churches and monasteries, stronghold facilities. It is a religious centre during the first Bulgarian realm; rocky monastery (12-14 century). A stronghold dating from documents from 1481, as Madara. Medieval monastery complex on the rocky slope.

  The village of Madara and the Madara Rider take a very important place in the long – aged history of Bulgaria. All monuments around Madara are straight connected with the way of living, culture and religion of Bulgarians. During centuries Madara has been spiritual centre of heretic and Christian Bulgaria.
  Today in the village of Madara live 1600 people, true Bulgarian inhabitants. Our village is visited from many native and foreign tourists. It is the only village in the province of Shumen that doesn’t have a table built.
  During 1995, on a general meeting of the inhabitants of the village an Enterprising committee was chosen, which in 1996 was registered as a “St George the Victorious” foundation, with it’s only aim building the Christian temple with donations from the local people. With the money gained till now, a project for the temple with donations from the local people.
